Wondering where visitors from the US can travel to in Europe? Entry requirements have been dropping like flies over the past few months, and as of right now, over 65% of Europe is open to Americans, as well as other nationalities like Canadians and Brits, without any travel restrictions.
So if you’re looking to plan a vacation in Europe this summer, know that you have plenty of options to enjoy that laid-back holiday you’ve been waiting for these two past years. Here are the countries in Europe that are open to international tourists, with no entry requirements or travel rules.
Entry Requirements For Europe: Countries That Have Lifted Restrictions
At this time, a total of 27 nations in Europe have completely removed their travel restrictions, including:
- Ireland
- UK
- Denmark
- Sweden
- Norway
- Iceland
- Lithuania
- Latvia
- Poland
- Czechia
- Switzerland
- Liechtenstein
- Gibraltar
- Madeira
- Slovenia
- Slovakia
- Hungary
- Croatia
- Serbia
- Romania
- Bulgaria
- Moldova
- Montenegro
- Kosovo
- Albania
- North Macedonia
- Greece
This means that U.S., Canadian, Australian, and travelers from a number of other nations can visit these countries in Europe without any entry requirements (by air, land, or sea).
European Countries With Some Entry Requirements Remaining For Travelers
While one or two entry requirements remain in place for the following 13 countries in Europe, these nations have also eased some of their travel restrictions over the past few months.
Here are the ones that still have some form of entry requirements left, to varying degrees:
- Finland
- Estonia
- Germany
- France
- Italy
- Spain
- Portugal
- Belgium
- Netherlands
- Austria
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Malta
- Luxembourg

You can check the website daily for the latest updates on travel restrictions to see if the destination that you’re planning on traveling to is free of entry requirements.
Visiting Europe: Entry Requirements For Travelers
If you plan on country-hopping throughout Europe this summer, constantly check the guidance for EU travel. Because some countries have different travel restrictions depending on which country you’re entering from, you may have to abide by certain entry requirements whether you’re traveling via land, air, or sea, and it could change instantly.
For instance, the travel restrictions might differ if you’re entering from a country within the EU/EEA zone (EU/Schengen region) or from somewhere outside of the EU. To simplify the travel process, start your trip in a country in Europe that has already scrapped its entry requirements and go from there.
What About Masks?
When it comes to masking rules in each country, we recommend checking the individual government guidance of the destination(s) that you plan on visiting prior to travel so that you’re prepared.
Many countries in Europe, including Ireland and Sweden, scrapped their mask mandates along with their entry requirements, so there are lots of countries where masks currently aren’t required in most public spaces.
US Companies Urge Biden To Scrap Remaining Entry Requirement For Travelers
While Europe has been on the path to fully reopen to tourists over the past few months, the US continues to keep some of its Covid-related entry requirements in place for travelers.
Even though the ongoing federal mask mandate was recently dropped, testing requirements remain in place for travelers arriving by air.
This week, the US Travel Association sent an official letter to the White House, urging President Biden to remove the testing requirement for vaccinated travelers entering the US. The letter was signed by over 260 US-based companies, including major airlines and hotel chains.
The letter noted that entry requirements should change due to the improved epidemiological situation as well as the urgency to speed up economic recovery, especially for the upcoming summer travel season.
There’s no update yet on when or whether the testing requirement to enter the US will be scrapped.
