United And Delta Airlines Launch New Menus With Plant Based Options

The carriers United Airlines and Delta Airlines have announced this week new updates to their menu options including plant-based alternatives for their customers. 

As part of their new alliance with Impossible Foods, United Airlines is now adding two new plant-based items to their menus on certain flights and airport lounges.

Starting this week, first-class passengers will now be able to taste the United-exclusive Impossible Meatball Bowl and the Impossible Sausage on domestic flights with more than 800 miles and in Polaris lounges in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Newark, and Chicago.

Delta Airlines, on the other hand, has included in its menu new farmer-direct teas, cold-brew coffee, wine, beer, sundaes, and snacks. The carrier has highlighted its alliances with small businesses and suppliers from all over the world, including women and LGBTQ+-led brands.

Delta has also announced that first-class passengers will be able to enjoy welcome meals and beverages before takeoff —on flights 900 miles or greater—, and seasonal menus which also include plant-based options such as the harissa-spiced Impossible burger. The carrier had already announced a plant-based menu for long-haul flights a few months ago, and will now include new summer options.

Both carriers have been creating new menu options to satisfy their passengers’ needs, testing these alternatives with their selected audience, and reinstating offerings that were previously available but reduced or banned during the pandemic.

United Airlines New Menu With Plant-Based Options

The carrier has explained that the decision on including plant-based meals has been taken considering US consumers and their increasing interest in this type of food. 

Aaron McMillan, United Managing Director of Hospitality and Planning, said:  “To many travelers, the quality of food choices at the airport and in the sky are a really important part of the customer experience, so we’re invested in making sure our menu items exceed their expectations. This is the first of many updates we look forward to sharing in the months ahead.”

The Impossible Meatball Bowl —served to first class on domestic flights with more than 800 miles— features three meatballs made from plants and broccolini, a unique mixture of Impossible Foods products, placed on a bed of couscous and topped with tomato sauce. 

For breakfast, at San Francisco, Los Angeles, Newark and Chicago O’Hare  Polaris lounges, passengers will be able to taste the Impossible Sausage as an omelet ingredient or breakfast patties in the buffet.

Dan Greene, Senior Vice President of Sales at Impossible Foods, also showed enthusiasm with this new alliance and menu, and said:  “It’s exciting to see the airline bring new options to consumers that are better tasting and better for the planet. We think United flyers are going to love having access to Impossible dishes in the air and in the lounge.”

Delta Airlines New Offerings

Now that the pandemic restrictions have been eased, Delta has been reintroducing hot meals and new products like plant-based lamb meatballs or impossible burgers. This week, the carrier announced new products as part of their alliances with small businesses. 

Kristen Manion Taylor, S.V.P. of In-Flight Service at Delta, said: “We’re always listening to what our customers tell us they’d like to see onboard, and we’re giving them more of what they say they’re craving, while also making an impact in global communities.” 

Delta will be offering Thrive Farmers products in all cabins, such as English Breakfast tea —and special teas for Delta One customers like Egyptian Chamomile—, and also Explorer Cold Brew’s Ethiopian coffee.

The company Une Femme will offer exclusive sparkling wine for Delta, Tip Top Proper Cocktails will provide Delta passengers —during trans-oceanic routes— canned margaritas or old fashioned, and  Kona Brewing their beers Big Wave Golden Ale for domestic flights.

The new snacks include mini Sunchips Harvest Cheddar Flavored Whole Grain Snacks, Lemon Coconut bars from Kate’s Real Food and for Delta One customers even gourmet ice cream from High Road Craft. Product availability will depend on the routes, passengers class and availability.
